Brian Deegan takes 3rd at the Red Bull Global Rallycross Season Opener
"Perhaps best known as “The General,” Brian Deegan has been a perennial championship contender in Red Bull Global Rallycross year in and year out. In 2012, he earned a series-high five podium finishes in six races on the way to a runner-up finish in points; last season, he earned podiums in New Hampshire, Bristol, and Charlotte to come home fourth overall.
2014 will be a change of pace for Deegan, as he scales back his Red Bull GRC commitment to five races in the #38 Rockstar Energy Drink Ford Fiesta ST this season. But don’t be fooled—his heart is still fully into rallycross, and he won’t be any less of a challenger for race wins just because he’s not racing for points. In an exclusive interview, Deegan talked about why he chose to keep running in Red Bull GRC, his continued relationship with Ford, and how racing for victories and pride may give him a competitive advantage deep into the season:
First off, what motivated you to stick around in Red Bull GRC, even knowing that you could only do a limited schedule?
I’ve been part of GRC, and been part of rally at X Games, since day one. I want to stay involved, and I feel like the series could start to grow now, with all the support it has. Hopefully it does, hopefully the sport keeps growing, and hopefully I can come here full-time if the schedule works out. My truck racing program is really good, and I really enjoy the truck racing because it’s dirt tracks, big jumps, it’s more like motocross.
But one thing I like about rally is that it’s more of a challenge for me, because it’s hard for me to master, and there are so many good drivers. I’ve learned a lot from it, and I like being a part of it. I didn’t want to leave—I wanted to keep my foot in the door here, and dealing with Ford, I think it’s important to them. So that’s why I’m here, and I have fun doing it."
